Prevention

Did you know that 20% of the kids get 80% of the cavities? Dental caries is the number one preventable childhood disease. Our team at Bay Area Kids Dentistry loves to educate parents, caregivers and our patients about good oral hygiene practices and nutrition counseling.

Complimentary Infant exam (0- 1 year)

Whether you are a new parent or an expecting parent or have a little one under the age of one. Come see us, we would love to show you how we can set your little one on a path of no cavities for a lifetime with just a few steps. And to make it even better, we do it at no cost that is how much we believe in early prevention.

Routine cleaning and exam

Routine dental cleanings and exams are important for your child to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent decay and disease. Your daily home care is also critical, but the professional cleanings remove mineralized plaque that can develop despite good brushing and flossing, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. Following the guidelines set forth by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend that your child see us for a cleaning and exam once every six months

Fluoride Treatment: Children receiving a well balanced diet get all nutrients they needs with one exception.  Fluoride, treatments twice a year are a simple and effective way to prevent tooth decay .

Sealants: 80% cavities occur inside pits and fissures on molars.  A sealant is a thin plastic-like coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars to prevent food from being trapped inside pits and fissures.

Sports Dentistry/Safety: Many contact sports expose children to dental trauma. Utilization of mouth guards during these activities can help minimize the severity of the trauma.

Growth and Development Assessment

Space Analysis: As a part of your child’s dental exam we perform an assessment of your child’s developing teeth with an evaluation of any potential crowding or spacing concerns in the jaw. This is very vital in determining if early braces will be needed.

Growth Modification appliance therapy: In some children the jaws do not develop in an uniform fashion leading to crossbite or underbite occurring from  non nutritive habits such as pacifier or thumbsucking present in the early years. This therapy helps in modifying the growth pattern by utilization of the natural growth occurring in the child.

Habit breaking appliance: Many children posses non nutritive habits such as thumb or finger sucking, pacifier use, tongue thrusting which could lead to permanent changes in the developing jaw. Early intervention using habit breaking appliances can prevent such permanent changes.

Interceptive orthodontics/braces: In certain cases early intervention of braces can prevent the need for future extraction of permanent teeth to create space for the alignment of crowded teeth.

Restorative Treatment

Based on the extent of the dental decay we recommend treatment options for your child that is esthetic and functional.

White Fillings: Our practice only offers the metal free white fillings which do not contain any mercury. These are best suited for small cavities and are the most aesthetic options for kids.

Crowns: In cases where there is significant loss of tooth structure due to  extensive tooth decay ,  crowns are considered the treatment choice, since they not only help fix the cavities but also restore the complete functionality of the tooth.

We also provide the all white ,metal free Zirconia crowns in addition to the stainless steel crowns.

Pulp Treatment ( Baby root canal ): This includes the treatment of the affected nerve when the deep decay involves the nerve.

Extraction and Space Maintenance: In some severe cases, which require extractions, we recommend the appropriate space maintainer that adequately holds the space until the new tooth is ready.

Behavior Management

We understand how children are unique and best cope with newer experiences when adequately prepared. To help them achieve a favorable experience we utilize various behavior management techniques such as Tell-Show-Do, role-play, distraction and positive reinforcements. Probably that explains why we have a television in all our treatment rooms and fun presents to pick at the end of every visit.

Our pharmacological options also include

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Sometimes getting dental treatment can induce anxiety in your child and routine behavior management technique may not be adequate. In these cases to cope with the anxiety and allay the fear, we do offer nitrous oxide or laughing gas.

Sedation
Sedation is used when a child is very young or extremely apprehensive. Your child is still conscious but more relaxed and cooperative. This enables us to complete the treatment in a more comfortable and less traumatic manner

General Anesthesia:
For very young children, or in cases of special health necessities we do offer general anesthesia in our office with the help of our anesthesiologist to provide all the dental work in a comfortable manner to your child.
