5 to 12 years old

Ages 5 to 12 Years

At Bay Area Kids Dentistry, we utilize digital dental X-rays to detect cavities between teeth and monitor the development of permanent teeth. Children between five and 12 years old often look forward to their dental visits, excited to see their brushing scores and receive the special prize we offer to our young patients.

How should I prepare

my child for dental visits?

Reassure your child by focusing on the positive aspects of past dental visits and saving any complex questions for our dental team. It’s often best to provide minimal details about dental procedures at home. Our skilled team can explain everything from fillings to cleanings in a child-friendly way.

Avoid using words like “shot” or “hurt” and don’t share any negative dental experiences you or family members might have had. If you’re unsure how to address a question, saying, “I don’t know, but the dentist will be very careful and take good care of you” can help ease your child’s concerns.

Common Questions During a Child’s Dental Visit

When will my child lose their first tooth?

The timing for losing the first tooth can vary, but most children lose their first tooth around age six. It’s common for children to lose their first tooth between ages five and seven, with girls usually losing their first tooth slightly earlier than boys.

What should I be doing at home?

Establish a consistent oral hygiene routine. Ensure your child is brushing their teeth twice daily for two minutes each time and flossing once a day.

When your child is younger, they may need more help from you. Be sure to supervise younger children while gradually teaching them proper techniques.

Promote a tooth-friendly diet by Limiting sugary snacks and drinks, encouraging water instead of juice or soda, and offering healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables, and cheese.

What kind of toothbrush does my child need?

Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush sized for your child’s mouth. Consider electric toothbrushes, which can be more effective and fun for kids.

Use fluoride toothpaste (pea-sized amount for children under eight).

How often should my child see a dentist?

Visit the dentist every six months for cleanings and exams. Don’t wait for pain or visible issues to seek dental care. Also, be aware of orthodontic needs and ask your dentist about potential orthodontic evaluations when your child is around age seven.

Is there anything else I should know?

Use protective gear for sports. Ensure children wear mouthguards during contact sports or activities.

Teach proper tooth care during illness. Make sure your child rinses their mouth with water after vomiting and continues regular oral care even when sick.
